Pig iron is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of more than 2%, and industrial pig iron generally has a carbon content of 2.5% to 4%, and contains C, SI, Mn, S, P and other elements. It is smelted by blast furnace with iron ore.
According to the different forms of carbon in pig iron, it can be divided into Steelmaking pig iron, Grey pig iron and Nodular pig iron,etc.
1, the carbon in steelmaking pig iron mainly exists in the form of iron carbide, its section is white, usually called white iron.This pig iron is hard and brittle, and is generally used as a raw material for steelmaking.
2, cast pig iron in the form of carbon flake graphite, its fracture for gray, often called gray iron.Because graphite is soft and lubricated, cast pig iron has good cutting, wear resistance and casting properties.But its strength is not enough, so it can not be forged and rolled, can only be used for manufacturing a variety of castings, such as casting a variety of machine bed, iron pipes.
3, the carbon in ductile iron in the form of spherical graphite, its mechanical properties far better than gray iron and close to steel, it has excellent casting, cutting and wear resistance, a certain degree of elasticity, widely used in the manufacture of crankshaft, gear, piston and other advanced casting and a variety of mechanical parts.
4, in addition, containing silicon, manganese, nickel or other elements content is particularly high pig iron, called alloy pig iron, such as ferrosilicon, fermanganese, commonly used as steelmaking raw materials, in the steelmaking when adding some alloy pig iron, can improve the performance of steel.
